BCPS Return to Play Plan

Posted On: Monday, August 24, 2020
By: Mike Foxwell

The Office of Athletics has unveiled the Athletic Return to Play Plan to the board of education. I would like to share with you the plan for the 2020-21 school year.

Now that the MPSSAA has announced that the Fall and Winter seasons have been postponed. The BCPS Office of Athletics has submitted a 2 semester Return of Athletics Plan which aligns with the guidance submitted by the MPSSAA.

In the 1st semester – there will be 100% Virtual Coaching. NO IN-PERSON COACHING!!!

Coaches will be given 3 specified sports season windows to engage with their student athletes virtually.

Fall Season:  Sept 8th– Oct 23rd Registration is open now until Sept 8th

*Fall coaches will have 8 weeks to engage with their student athletes in a virtual setting.

Winter Season:  Oct 26 – Dec 11 Registration will open Oct. 1st

*Winter coaches will have 7 weeks to engage with their student athletes in a virtual setting.

Spring Season:  Dec 14-Jan 29 Registration will open Nov. 16th

*Spring coaches will have 7 weeks to engage with their student athletes in a virtual setting.

This was put together so that students did not have to pick between sports and coaches.

Our Focus during 1st semester are the following:

  1. The social/emotional needs of our student athletes.
  2. The academic progress and support of our Student Athletes.
  3. The athletic conditioning of our student athletes.
  4. These sessions are not intended for X’s and O’s Coaching

In addition, we will continue with our normal procedure of collecting parent permission slips, getting physicals and other necessary paperwork to confirm student health, safety and participation. This will be done via Form ReLeaf information listed below!

Our coaches will be engaging with all interested student athletes. This will not be a tryout period, nor installation of a sports specific plan. This is about engaging, supporting and reconnecting with our student athletes.

Our expectations are for coaches to engage in every area of focus for at least 3/4 hours a week.

During that time, coaches should be:

  1. Tracking social emotional needs of student athletes through virtual platforms.
  2. Monitoring and providing academic supports through progress sheets and connecting with students’ teachers if needed.
  3. Providing Conditioning programs that are Body weight based that can be done from home. (Equity and Safety Lens).
  4. Assisting with the College Recruiting process when necessary.

In addition, the Office of Athletics will be providing 4 virtual workshop opportunities for high school student athletes and 2 professional development opportunities for coaches through our partnership with PCA: Positive Coaching Alliance and the Purpose to Passion organization. These opportunities will take place once a month from September – December and will be provided to the student at no cost. Details regarding these workshop opportunities (i.e. Topics and Dates) will be given soon. This activity will provide opportunities for student athletes to reconnect virtually with their peers, maintain personal growth, and offer a platform to discuss issues that are directly related to, being a student athlete.

This plan will take us up to the 2nd semester, which will hopefully be the restart of high school athletics.
